AUTOCHTHONOUS FLORA AND VINEYARDS ROUTE

Our botanical garden

The island´s climate, together with the intense human action, condition the kind of vegetation in Lanzarote. Drought and a slightly rough terrain cause a dry environment, and therefore, xerophilus scrubland constitutes the main vegetation of the island.

The aridity of the soil also determines the  kind of flora, and the current configuration of the scrubland, to a large extent, depends on the pressure exerted by the human action (extensive dry-land crops and excessive sepherding) to which Lanzarote has been subjected.

These conditions provoke an impoverishment of the flora, typical of the basaltic soil of the island, and consenquently, especies as the "cardón" (Euphorbia canariensis) or the "tabaiba dulce" (Euphorbia balsamifera) are scanty. On the other hand, secondary formations as the "aulagar" achieve great importance in a poor soil environment. We exhibit a selection of autochtonous vegetation in our garden.
